Penetrate the Packaging Market in 2025 with Sustainable Plastics

The Thai government has set a goal to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 and net zero GHG emissions by 2065. Therefore, brands need to adapt to appeal to consumers while adhere to sustainability and technological advancements. The same goes for plastic packaging which is a segment that needs to focus even more on sustainability.

Packaging from Recycled Plastics and Bioplastics

The popularity of recycled plastics and bioplastics continues to grow. However, only 16% of the world's plastic waste is currently being recycled, according to an analysis by McKinsey. PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate) and polyolefins are the most recycled types of plastics, and are expected to increase in popularity in the packaging sector. NexantECA expects the consumption of recycled polyolefins to grow by 7.8% between 2021 and 2030.

Meanwhile, bioplastics which are made from naturally degradable and inexpensive feedstocks such as pea protein, corn, wheat, potatoes, and cassava are also rising in popularity because they reduce hydrocarbon usage and lessen environmental impact.

Modern Approach to Plastic Packaging Development

Smart Packaging and Technology Integration

2025 will be the year of smart packaging embedded with QR codes, RFID tags or NFC chips to provide consumers with more product information and prevent counterfeiting.

Customization and Personalization

Consumers in 2025 expect a more customized packaging experience, especially for brands selling directly to them via e-commerce.

Minimalist and Transparent Packaging

Minimalist packaging uses less material, which appeals to eco-conscious shoppers. Transparent packaging also helps consumers see the product inside and builds trust.

Flexible Packaging

Flexible packaging will continue to gain popularity due to its lightweight and flexibility, with stand-up pouches, resealable pouches and squeeze tubes dominating the market in 2025.

Edible Packaging

Edible packaging made from natural ingredients such as seaweed or starch is expected to get a huge boost in 2025, particularly in the food and beverage industry.

E-Commerce-Ready Packaging

Packaging designed for shipping with an emphasis on lightweight and durability, will help reduce shipping costs and promote sustainability which will be even more essential for brands in 2025.

Reusable Packaging Systems

The market for reusable packaging will continue to expand as it reduces single-use waste, thus promoting longer product lifecycles and a circular economy.

Health-Conscious Packaging

Packaging with antimicrobial properties to keep the products fresh and extend their shelf life especially in the food and pharmaceutical industries will be vital in 2025.

Lightweight Packaging for Carbon Footprint Reduction

Lightweight packaging helps reduce the overall weight of the product and the amount of fuel required to transport it to its destination.

Opportunities and Impacts on the Plastics and Packaging Industry

The trend of packaging industry will increasingly focus on sustainability, convenience, and technology, so businesses should innovate with eco-friendly materials and smart designs to meet consumer expectations, comply with public regulations, and stay competitive in the market.
